Better standards are most powerful when they do more than standardize data. They give institutions greater flexibility to describe, understand, and continuously improve their educational programs.

Fenix Alma Solutions Inc. is pleased to announce its participation in the AAMC MedBiquitous Educational Methodology implementation pilot through VidaNovaVLE®, its comprehensive virtual learning environment purpose-built for health sciences education.

The pilot explores implementing a more flexible, matrix-based approach to representing educational methodology. Rather than relying solely on a fixed list of instructional and assessment methods, the emerging framework offers a richer way to describe the context in which learning and assessment occur. This includes dimensions such as modality, learner type, group size, assessor role, and other meaningful characteristics.

This direction aligns closely with the foundational approach taken within VidaNovaVLE®.

Building on Flexible Taxonomy Management

At the center of this approach is VidaNovaVLE®’s Taxonomy Management capability, which allows institutions to create, manage, map, and evolve multiple educational frameworks without forcing their curricula into rigid structures.

This provides a strong foundation for implementing the emerging MedBiquitous matrix model in a way that supports greater consistency and interoperability while preserving the terminology, frameworks, and educational context unique to each institution.

Connecting Data Across the Educational Ecosystem

The opportunity extends well beyond instructional methodology.

Fenix Alma’s broader vision is for taxonomy to serve as a connective layer across the educational ecosystem, linking:

  • Curriculum structures and learning objectives
  • Instructional and assessment methods
  • Competencies and educational frameworks
  • Learner performance and longitudinal progression
  • Accreditation evidence and Scope Survey reporting
  • Program evaluation and continuous quality improvement
  • Reporting, analytics, and institutional decision-making

The result is not simply more curriculum data. It is data with enough structure and context to help institutions ask and answer increasingly meaningful questions about their programs and learners.

By connecting these areas within a unified environment, institutions can develop a more complete understanding of how curriculum is designed, how learning and assessment occur, how learners progress, and how educational activities contribute to broader program outcomes.

Turning Standards into Practice

This work is strengthened by collaboration. We are especially grateful to our partners at Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine and UT Southwestern Medical Center for sharing their perspectives and helping us explore how emerging standards can be translated into practical capabilities for medical education.

We also thank the AAMC and MedBiquitous for leading this important initiative. In particular, we recognize Dr. Alexis L. Rossi Aguirre, PhD, MEd, MA; Dr. Julie Youm; and the many Working Group contributors who shared their time and expertise in shaping its direction.

Participating alongside institutions, educators, standards leaders, and technology partners has reinforced a core belief at Fenix Alma: interoperability standards deliver their greatest value when they become practical tools that support educators and improve the learning experience for students.

Moving Beyond Standards Compliance

We are excited about where this work is heading and even more excited about what it can enable next.

As we continue collaborating with current partners, prospective partners, and the broader health professions education community, we look forward to moving beyond standards compliance toward something even more valuable: an increasingly connected understanding of curriculum, assessment, learner performance, and program outcomes across the entire educational journey.
