We are honoured to announce that Dr. M. Ian Bowmer has joined the Advisory Board of Fenix Alma Solutions Inc.
Dr. Bowmer brings expertise, leadership, and over 40 years of experience in medical education and healthcare. An internist, infectious disease specialist, and researcher, he has been involved in advancing medical education on both national and international levels throughout his career.
A graduate of McGill University (B.Sc. 1965; MD 1969) with postgraduate education in internal medicine and infectious diseases at the Royal Victoria Hospital and McGill University, Dr. Bowmer joined the Faculty of Medicine at Memorial University in 1975. Over his tenure, he served as Assistant Dean for Postgraduate Medical Education, Chair of the Discipline of Medicine, and Dean of Medicine from 1996 to 2004. As the first Chair of the Board of the Community Health St. John’s Region, he oversaw the amalgamation of five separate services into one cohesive institution. He also served as a member and, subsequently, Vice-Chair of the Federal Health Council of Canada. His clinical research expertise concentrated on HIV/AIDS care, where he has chaired national working groups and co-edited a comprehensive guide for healthcare providers.
After retiring from Memorial University in 2006, he was appointed Executive Director and CEO of the Medical Council of Canada (MCC), a role he held for 11 years. In 2019, Dr. Bowmer was elected President of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC), following previous roles as a member of the Council and as Chair of its Accreditation and Credential Committees. Dr. Bowmer is currently an assessor for the World Federation of Medical Education(WFME), participating in WFME recognition teams with the goal of enhancing medical education worldwide.
Dr. Bowmer’s contributions have been recognized with many honours, including Canada’s 125th Confederation Medal, the Dr. Louis Levasseur Award from the MCC, the Ronald V. Christie Award from the Canadian Association of Professors of Medicine, and the Royal College’s James H. Graham Award for merit. In 2003, he was elected to the Royal College of Physicians, London, in recognition of his contributions to medicine and medical education. Most recently, he was awarded the Senate 150th Anniversary Medal for his outstanding contributions to the community.
