At Fenix Alma Solutions Inc., we believe that to provide a proficient and comprehensive Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), you need to support the delivery of course content in many different engaging ways. VidaNovaVLE™’s Lessons Module is just one example of how we accomplish that.
In this post, we’ll focus on the Lessons Module and how it supports delivering engaging course content alongside formative assessment.
The Lessons activity module enables an instructor to deliver content and practice activities in exciting and flexible ways. An instructor can use a Lesson to create a linear set of content pages or instructional activities that offer a variety of paths or options for the learner. In either case, instructors can increase engagement and ensure understanding by including various question types, such as multiple choice, matching, and short answer. Depending on the learner’s answer choice and how the instructor designs the Lesson, learners may progress to the next page, be taken back to a previous page, or be redirected down a different path entirely. For example, instructors can choose to group pages together to provide entire sections of the Lesson only to those learners who select a particular response to a question.
VidaNovaVLE™ supports the grading of Lessons and the pushing of those grades to the gradebook automatically.
While the possibilities that the Lessons Module provides are nearly endless, some examples include:
self-directed learning of a new topic
scenarios, simulations, or decision-making exercises
differentiated study with different sets of questions depending upon answers given to initial questions
So what do learners see when working through a Lesson?
Learners who click on the Lesson icon from a course or session to access it will most likely see an introductory page with one or more buttons they can use to choose the path they wish to take. The display may vary according to how the instructor has designed the Lesson. For example, there may or may not be a list of pages down the side, and they may or may not see their ongoing score.
Learners progress through the Lesson, working through content pages and/or various types of question pages. After answering a question, the learner can view a page that provides feedback and gives them the answer if offered. The Lesson may be timed, display a progress bar, and have a table of contents showing all pages and allowing navigation. It is also possible to hide the navigation from the learner if desired
The Lesson ends when the learner has met the criteria set by the Lesson’s creator. Criteria for completion could be answering a certain number of questions correctly, accessing several pages with content (text, audio, or video), or following a specific navigational path. Once the Lesson is complete, a final page appears where the learner can check their score, if applicable, and return to the main course page or some other specified activity.
In addition to the flexible Lesson features already within VidaNovaVLE™, we will be integrating our Taxonomy Management Module functionality into the Lessons Module. By adding to the already engaging Lesson functionality, we are leveraging our ability to track very granular data points that will help describe precisely where, when, and how you teach and assess your curriculum and, more importantly, how learners perform!
Stay tuned for more on this as we head toward our official launch of VidaNovaVLE™ in the coming weeks!
