Flexible Roles & Permissions

Having worked previously with several health sciences institutions, we understand that not every institution has the same requirements regarding roles and permissions. In fact, most of them are unique concerning what roles exist and which should have access to particular features and data points. That is why it is so important to us to ensure VidaNovaVLE™ allows for highly configurable roles and permissions. We also wanted to ensure that our institutions wouldn’t require developer intervention to override default roles/permissions. Some other platforms on the market need a developer to go into the database and adjust some flags to (possibly) achieve the permissions an institution hopes to restrict or permit.

In VidaNovaVLE™, you can work with our Customer Success Leads to configure custom permissions. Some examples of specific permissions we’ve encountered and support are:

  • Create specific administrative/faculty roles with distinct feature permissions
  • Create specific faculty roles for various purposes (tutor, advisor, facilitator, etc.)
  • Allow only certain users to access particular reports
  • Allow a student to help administer a specific course
  • Empower students to edit an individual discussion forum
  • Override default permissions
  • Rename default roles at the course level (so different courses can have differently named roles as required)
  • And more!

Just as important as creating and modifying roles and their permissions is the ability to report on them, making the capability overview report and the check permissions feature within VidaNovaVLE™ powerful and essential tools for those looking to customize and track roles/permissions. The capability overview report allows admins to select a capability and one or more roles, and the report will then display the role and permission level for that capability. The check permissions feature lets certain users view all the roles in the current and higher contexts and capabilities for a selected user based on their role.

Ultimately, we understand that the needs of every institution – and every program – are unique, and we will ensure that VidaNovaVLE™ takes that into account, especially regarding roles and permissions.
